Leh Ladakh – A promise

Leh Ladakh

Cold winds blow through the crevasses of the mountains and scathe my face my body and my soul. I feel a deep churning inside, an unexplainable peace achieved only by realising that nature in every form has the power to tame the soul. I felt enslaved in Leh not only by the beauty I was surrounded by but the simplicity of its magnificence.

Ladakh is a windswept mountainous region of Jammu and Kashmir, bordered by the Himalayan Mountains to the South and the Kunlun Mountains to the North. The splendor and majesty of the mountains is captivating. An arid and rugged phantasmagoria of stone in silence telling a million stories astounds the senses and makes one want to go deeper and deeper into the meandering force of nature. Leh is the capital of Ladakh.

Enlightenment can be found in every corner of this magnificent city. But I found mine in the faces of four absolutely gorgeous Leh kids that I met in the Market. They were holding hands and walking through the market unafraid and lost in each other. Their unabashed bonhomie and friendship awakened the dervish in me and I was compelled to follow the four kids and take part in their revelry. I felt like a kid again, a surge of emotions awakened in me. In their smiles I found answers. Answers that I didn’t know I was looking for. The world as flawed as it is and as fragmented and broken as it seems can still be overcome by love. We are all capable of loving more than we do. Love is the only commodity that has the power to grow when distributed generously and randomly. I left the mountains behind in Leh, but when I returned home I realised that Leh has given me an insurmountable gift. A bigger heart! I am eternally grateful to Leh and the only way I can repay the debt is by making a promise to return to Leh. A promise that I also made to those four gorgeous kids in the market who taught me more about life and love than any guru, teacher or lover.
