I was glancing through a magazine and saw beautiful pieces of forgotten jewelry. Forgotten because the nose ring, an enchanting piece of jewelry which rarely makes an appearance in the mainstream was brought down by the majestic Mughals to India from the Middle East. Surprised? So was I when I stumbled upon this trivia.
The nose ring or the ‘Nath’ is an ode to femininity with its ethereal and simplistic appeal. They say after the eyes, it’s the nose that is the most prominent of features. During the era of Mughals art flourished and beauty was appreciated. Many a drunken nights poets, mystics, painters and artists were beguiled by the nose ring and in their endeavor to perfect their art they sought inspiration from women. The enigma of being a muse to an artist is evocative and timeless and somehow women and the nath have been part of this shared history. Like a poet who stays awake many a nights to perfect his couplet, the ‘nath’ or the nose ring has evoked sensual desires and kept many artists & troubadours awake; igniting a pain captured and inspired by the ‘nath’.
Inspired by the hypnotic era of the 16th -18th century , I wanted to create a look that resonates with those graceful times. This Eid, I picked pieces that reflect what could be the lives of Mughal women and infused it with my personal style. My ensemble expressed layers of earthy pastel tones. For my conservative attire I chose a two layer white cotton kameez (top) and for the bottom I opted for a pair of beige traditional embroidery ( Lucknow chikan embroidery) pants also popularly known as palazzos. To compliment my conspicuous nose chain I draped around a beautiful hand block print dupatta (the Indian Stole). I adorned a hand cuff, my go-to finger rings and slipped into my glimmery peep toe sandals.
This Ramadan after the period of abstinence is over and the festivities begin, wear the ‘nath’ and let someone take it off. Eid Mubrak! 🙂
